The old Point Loma lighthouse sits atop 400-foot high cliffs on Point Loma, near the San Diego Bay and is located within the Cabrillo National Monument. This lighthouse was built in 1855 but was shut down less than 40 years later due to problems with it’s location; it was often hard for ships to see. The old lighthouse is not to be confused with the newer one located a short distance away.
When I visited the National Monument and the lighthouse in December, 2012 it had been turned into a small museum and preserved to show visitors what it was like when originally built with antique furnishings and decor. The interior also features a small but very neat wooden spiral staircase that you can walk up to the second floor. Don’t miss this monument when you’re in town – it has amazing views and a rich history.
